Hitchensââ¬â¢s Concepts of Religion and Politics Essay
One of the most questionable man, Christopher Hitchens, in his letters, ââ¬Å"Letters to a Young Contrarianâ⬠(2001), suggests that individuals of the contemporary society ought to abstain from speculation other than for themselves by assuming the pathway of being a contrarian. His motivation is to help ââ¬Å"individuals on how they think, and not what they think by making them a progressively autonomous and addressing personâ⬠(63). The letters take us through a pathway of what is intends to be a contrarian. He utilizes extraordinary individual and current guides to clarify why people ought to have a voice for their own. Two of the most significant themes in which he vigorously talks about are religion and prejudice. All through Hitchens letters, he utilizes tenderness and logos claims to make contentions in which oppose religion and bigotry in a viable way. One of the most begging to be proven wrong themes in Hitchensââ¬â¢s letters is about religion.Hitchens contends his point on why he is against religion utilizing an ethos approach. He picks up believability with the crowd by referencing, ââ¬Å"I can talk with more understanding of the Christian purposeful publicity, since I was immersed ass an Anglican, taught at a Methodist all inclusive school with obligatory strict guidance and was once gotten into the Greek Orthodox Church for reasons that are superfluous here.â⬠(59) While I do concur that he has increased some validity being that he once encountered an existence of what itââ¬â¢s like to be an adherent of God, I donââ¬â¢t think it makes his contention any more grounded. Along these lines, Hitchens contend his convictions and speaking to the audienceââ¬â¢s feelings. ââ¬Å"In a few different ways I feel frustrated about racists and for strict aficionados, since they overlook the main issue of being human, and merit a kind of pity. Be that as it may, at that point I solidify my heart, and choose to detest them even more, due to the wretchedness they perpetrate and in light of the abhorrent reason they advance for doing as such. It particularly pesters me when racists are blamed for separation. The capacity to separate is a valuable personnel; by making a decision about all individuals from one ââ¬Ëraceââ¬â¢ to be simply the equivalent, the supremacist definitely shows unequipped for discrimination.â⬠(110)

Why Publish a Writers Diary
Why Publish a Writers Diary George Orwell doesnt REALLY need an introduction. If all you know about him is that he wrote some really amazing books, like 1984 and Animal Farm, then youre fine. But if your interest carries you further than his greatest hits, if youre familiar with a few of his deep cuts (Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Homage to Catalonia), then youll probably be interested in reading the new Diaries. Besides traveling the world from India to Spain, besides working and living with the poorest of the poor, and besides taking a fascist bullet in the neck during the Spanish Civil War, Orwell was also an avid gardener. But whenever the diaries of famous people are published, you have to wonder what their purpose is. There will always be super-fans of any artist, those who are never sated and always want MORE of the person behind the work. And of course, if done well, they can be very entertaining. But what does the biography of a writer who lived a boring life add to the discussion of their books? I think the case can be made that Orwells life and writing were so entangled that they both can only be fully appreciated as two parts of a larger whole. But would reading a biography of, say, Cormac McCarthy, really add all that much to reaching a more profound understanding of his work? It seems like a distinction, however artificial, can be made here between writers who turn inwards and writers who face outward, those who mine the dark pits of their own psyche, and those who trim material from the overgrowth of an external reality. Now, I know that haters might say Hey, everyone is affected by the world around them! or Hey, even people who write about the world around them are expressing profoundly personal things! And you would be right. But I think the whole purpose of creating this distinction between inward- and outward-looking writers is to be able to better judge who would have the best biographies and diaries. I think that Jonathan Franzen is a more consistent writer than William Vollmann, but never would I ever want to read Franzens diary. Vollmann has spent time hanging out with prostitutes and the poor, fighting with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, exploring the Fukushima disaster, and trekking across the Arctic Circle. Yes, I would much rather read his diary. The cliché that has become a truism is that good writers can make anything interesting. But what isnt ever really talked about his how good readers will see through the bull crap everytime. William Burroughs, junky priest of the Beats and Punks, is by most standards a worse writer than Thomas Pynchon. But Pynchon is a recluse who hasnt left his house pretty much since he graduated from Cornell. Maybe he writes better, has more eloquent ideasbut unless his diary takes the form of daily literary essays, Id much rather read his concepts embodied in the language of his novels. Burroughs, on the other hand, lived an interesting enough to live to lead me to his diaries independent of his fiction writing. All this is to say that I think we should celebrate the publication of Orwells diaries. The publication of personal texts by other authors might smack of cheap opportunism, purely a money-making ploy. But I think publishers got it right with Orwell, just like I think they got it right with Burroughs and would do well to publish a diary (or even biography, PLEASE SOMEONE) of Vollmanns. Authors like these have works and lives that reflect each other, like two opposing mirrors, showing us a strange and comforting illusion of infinite complexity. Abuse of Power in George Orwellââ¬â¢s Animal Farm Essay
Often times in a communist society, a leaderââ¬â¢s use of language can lead to abuse of power. In George Orwellââ¬â¢s Animal Farm, the farm leaders, the pigs, use unknown language, invoke scare tactics, and create specific laws, thereby enabling them to control other animals, to suit their greedy desires, and to perform actions outside their realm of power. Because of the pigsââ¬â¢ use of broad language, implementation of scare tactics, and creation and manipulation of laws, they are able to get away with avoiding laws and convincing other animals into believing untrue stories and lies that are beneficial to the pigs. The first way the pigs use language to abuse their power is by using extensive detail and by using terms and vocabulary foreign toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Jones by using detail and as well as unknown terms. At this point in the story, the animals are confused about what has happened to Snowball and if he really is a traitor. To dispel their ideas about Snowballââ¬â¢s loyalty to animalism, Squealer tells the animals that all the information about Snowballââ¬â¢s criminal actions and his conspiracy with the humans is written down in a secret file. He describes the file and the conspiracy with such detail that the animals start to believe that these stories are actually part of their memories. Squealer also ensures that the animals recognize that the information is written down, which would make it incomprehens ible to most animals seeing that they would be unable to read it. The Joy Lack Club Review Essays - Chinatown, San Francisco, Amy Tan
The Joy Lack Club Review Blow from the South. The wind leaves no trail. Throw sand from the East to distract him. Blow, blow, blow. He cannot see. He is blind now. Make him lean away from the wind so he is easier to knock down. (p.98) What kind of thoughts go through a reader's mind when they come across a paragraph that has gibberish for its structure? How about a whole book of Chinese proverbs and bits of fragmented wisdom? The Joy Luck Club is a book that fits this description. The book has the potential of becoming another in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Made up from a collection of stories from the pasts of the main characters, the book lacks many of the qualities that are found in better known contemporary compositions. I personally thought it was the story line and the style that were two of the biggest let downs of the book. However, if there was one good thing that I could say about the book, it would be the way that it illustrates the conflicts of mother-daughter relationships. The possibi lity for a sequel does exist. After reading this book I can honestly say that I have no desire to read any more of Amy Tan's work. Since the beginning of time, English teachers have preached the importance of the plot diagram; you know that stupid mountain-looking thing that starts with the exposition and ends after the climax with a resolution, this book doesn't follow that diagram. The lack of a strong plot was the most prominent let down of the book. The stories were well written, and it was interesting to see how they fit together to compose the characteristics of the characters, but the book left me unsatisfied by having no real suspense. Throughout the entire book I never once thought, What's going to happen next? This made the book seem excruciatingly long. The depression that every one of the characters adds to the story also makes this book torturously long. Amy Tan's style of writing is also something I do not care to read. The constant changes in perspective, the broken English, and the bits of Chinese wisdom, are all things that I have no desire to experience. True, the style of a composition is where the art of writing lies, but when the style aggravates a reader something has to be said. The style of this book also added to the length. Even though I disagree with Amy Tan's style, I wouldn't change it even if I had the chance. I would never attack the medium of an author/artist's work. The way that she expressed her ideas through the book is the sign of a good artist, and by changing her style it would destroy her work. A good sequel to this book would have to focus more on the present and less on the past. Many improvements could be made to the style and plot then. Maybe it could include the next generation of daughters, and show how the desire to fit in with American culture is phasing out the traditions of the past. This would turn the tables on the daughters in the present book and place the in their mother's shoes. With the American values that the daughters have, it would be interesting to see how they would raise their children different from the way that they were raised. The Joy Luck Club is a book that I never would have read on my own free time. I cannot relate to any of the stories in the book. The lack of a strong plot left me wanting for more than what was written. Amy Tan's style, while praised by critics, was not in the least bit interesting to me. However, the stories did show the hardships that these women had to go through during a war. Of course, if I had really wanted to know that I would have gotten a much shorter answer from a history book. I will probably never recommend this book to anyone, and it would be a rare circumstance if I did.
